Evaluation

Media Evaluation

I have been creating a series of media products based around the launch of a new TV show. These have included: a website, a poster as well as a double page spread for a listings guide. These are all new media products that I have not created professionally before, therefore have had to learn the methods and techniques professionally used to create them.

My initial idea was based around creating a comedy TV channel that shows a very large variety of shows within the comedy genre, these will be through time as far back as the 60’s and from around the world, therefore making sure that there is something for everyone to enjoy. That is the overall aim for this channel to be able to have the biggest demographic possible by showing shows that everyone already likes and hopefully introducing shows to people that would not have seen them before, for example getting teenagers to watch the old classic sitcoms.

I started with research into current channels and the different aspects of the channels, such as there websites, advertisements, in newspapers and online as well as the actual identity and feel of the channels. I looked at general channels as well as specific channels and decided to mix the two and have a comedy specific channel but one with enough general programming that they specially picked from around the world and through time, that it would becoming accessible to all.

I have been using several software packages in order to create these items. For the website I have used the software package “Macromedia Dreamweaver”, for the double page listings guide and the poster I have managed to create these mainly using “Adobe Photoshop” with the aid of “Adobe InDesign”. The majority of these packages, with exception to “InDesign” I had used before but only on a very basic level, and had no real time spent using them before and was a basic novice at the start of this process. Therefore before I could start production of anything I had to learn how to use these software programs and evaluate what they were capable of.

The software programs are quite complicated to learn how to use, but after a few weeks and sessions with my tutor I felt confident enough to start pulling my designs and ideas together and start on, firstly the production of the Poster using “Adobe Photoshop”, this freely allowed me to create an A4 page in which to create the poster using a series of layers. I did have trouble getting to grips with the program and did have problems with remembering to deselect what i was working on before moving onto something else. This was not a major problem but it was time consuming and did make m job seem more tedious and demanding. However with a few online tutorials i started to get to grips with the functions of the program and was able to begin to make a professional looking poster. .

I started off by creating an identity for my channel in the form a logo that I made using "Adobe Photoshop". I decided to keep with simplicity whilst still trying to get the idea of the channel across and felt that incorporating a globe into the word comedy would be simple yet effective for my channel. This was the end product:

“Dreamweaver” was the program in which I had the most experience in prior to beginning this task due to the experience in using it to complete a task in my ICT A level last year. This allowed me to work independently on this without much requirement for help from my tutor; I started by creating a basic layout for a page with a header, footer and main section which was split into a left and right column. I then created my house style that would be consistent on each page; this consisted of the logo, tag line, links in the footer, the channel numbers and finally the buttons for navigating the site. Each of the buttons were rollover images so that when the user moves the mouse over the buttons they change. I did this using “Adobe Photoshop” by first creating the buttons and then inverting the colours and saving them as separate images this then allowed me to insert them into “Dreamweaver” as a rollover image where it changes from the first image to the second when the mouse rolls over them.

The double page spread I created using “In Design” which is a program I have had no prior knowledge with and therefore was learning during the process of creating this, but now feel fairly confident in the use of this program in future projects.

My poster I feel got completed to a very good quality, I made sure that it was not cluttered with information, and therefore quick and easy to read and take in therefore fitting its design and purpose as a poster. This allows passers by to just quickly look at it and know everything I needed them to, like, that it is an advert for a TV channel, what we show, the launch date as well as what channel to find us on. I also made sure that the colours were bright and the fonts were big making it eye-catching to anyone walking past. I also made sure that the logo and tag line were bold to allow people to start to recognise it and associate it with the channel. One further technique I used was to incorporate a very popular show as the main focus of the poster to help catch the eye of people with the picture and draw them in. However I felt that just one show on a poster may discourage fans of different shows, and as my channel is “Comedy 4 everyone” I made sure that I incorporated a few other shows from different countries and different times to allow a broader variety of people to notice the poster by seeing the picture from a show they like. An area I felt that I could have improved is by changing the background that I used it is quite a strong gradient and therefore is good for being eye-catching but, I feel this does take away from it looking more professional.

I then moved onto creating my double page spread, this I decided I would keep to a similar colour scheme as my poster so people would start to see the advertising campaign as one, I as can be shown from my designs I decided on a visual item on one page in the form of the shows I will be showing in a timeline over half a century. I also included as it was a listings guide listings for the channel over the launch weekend and on the other page with this wanted to take the opportunity of having a format in which people buy to read to take this chance to explain the channel and what we aim to achieve. I feel this also got created to a high quality but again feel that using the same colour scheme as the poster did make it loose a little if it’s professional feel, however this channel is supposed to be fun and vibrant so bold colours aren’t too much of a hindrance to it.

Moving onto the success of the website I feel that it is a good website, it is vibrant, easy to use and navigate and explains the channel and shows that are on it. I’ve included a video on the website, as specified in the brief, and this I have created using my knowledge from last year’s project of creating a two minute film opener. This is my main area of interest so felt that I would create an advert like video that introduced the site and could be used on TV to advertise the channel. I story-boarded the video and then shot it, and edited it using “Final Cut Pro”. The premise of the video was that anyone can watch the channel extending this to family pets. This ended up as gold fish watching from there bowl with a cat and sped up footage to create a comedy effect thrown in to keep to the purpose of the channel. I helped to create the comedy in this with the sped up footage of the fish supposedly trying to escape the cat and by overlaying a comedy music track. I gave the fish personalities my giving them voices in the form of a voice over. I am very happy with the final cut of the video, and feel that this shows the skills I have learnt last year I am still using and developing, continually improving. It can be found on the websites homepage.

Promotion is very important for a TV channel and in the new media industry the Internet is the corner stone of this. Therefore having a website as any company is important and as a new TV channel this is crucial, it allows for interactivity with the channel, and is an area in which information can be given to the viewers. The utilization of social networking sites such as "Facebook" "Myspace" and "Youtube" would be used to help advertise the channel and get knowledge of it out there.

Most TV channels have a specific demographics, such as "E4" are mainly based at the youth marker, with my channel I have decided to challenge this convention in the industry and try and bring in everyone to this channel, with a very varied and dynamic schedule of programs, through time and from around the world. This will help to ensure that there is something for everyone on this channel and ope in up to a wider audience.

However areas I feel could be improved is in the content of the website I feel that I could have gone further into this and created a more interesting and informative site. I also feel that I could have included some more technically challenging items such as more flash objects and audio player or some sort of gallery. I have on the other hand managed to manipulate the behaviours of items on the website using “Dreamweaver” to show and hide layers when buttons are clicked on the listings page, this therefore saves a new page having to be reloaded each time a button is clicked. This was a challenging task to complete and I had to research the Internet in order to work out how to do this, due to the fact I have not done this before.

There have been a few problems through this task, including the fact that half way through I had to change from creating an ident sequence to a listings guide double page spread, however even though I would have liked to have created an ident sequence I feel that the listing spread is of a higher quality than the ident sequence would have been able to be due to time and resource restraints.

I have carried out some audience feedback since completion and had the following comments made with re feral to my media products that I produced and the channel idea as a whole.

"The Poster is eye catching and uncluttered, I would definitely notice it and be intrigued by the channel, as everyone loves some comedy shows and I Instantly saw two show on the poster I already love"

(Sam Pepper, Age 17)

"I think it would be great to see this channel produced it shows all the sitcoms I used to watch when I was younger, I would love for my grandchildren to be introduced to them as well"

(Daphne Bailey Age 74)

In conclusion I feel that the finished products are very close to my original designs that I created and therefore showing I am able to create the visions I have, practically. The products fulfil their needs very well and although maybe not completely professional standard I feel that they could be used in the real world. I am most happy with my poster with it being bold and eye-catching, as well I feel I have been able to create the perfect balance of information and images allowing people to quickly look at it and get all the information that I need them to. My project has had a fairly positive response and therefore I feel has been successful. I have learnt many new skills and now feel confident with new software packages and in my ability to create these media products in future. My skills have developed and improved, from last year and through to this year I have built confidence in the professional creation of media products as well as learning the technologies and theories behind them.

Production

Production
Here are all the end products that I have created in this project.

Poster
Here is the poster that I have created to help market my new TV channel, I have created it using "Adobe Photoshop" and I feel gets across the Idea of the channel and advertises the opening weekend as well as the programs that will be shown on it.

This is an effective advertisement for the channel as it shows the name of the channe, as well as the date it starts and the variety of programmes that it will be showing. I have used one main, curently popular show, to advertise the channels opening weekend, which is "Scrubs" as well as pictures of several others shows that will be showing. These shows are very different in order to try and show something that everyone will like on the poster, and appeal and catch the eye of all ages and demagraphics. Most importantly where the channel can be found is shown, and it will show the channel numbes for the numerous number of television platforms.

Listings Guide (Double Page Spread)
Here is the double page spread that I have created for the listings magazine to further help promote the channels launch.

I have kept this in a similar style as the Poster to help to establish an identity and house style for the channel and this will help the viewers become associated with the channel and make it recogniseable.

Website
The full working website has now been produced using the "Dreamweave" software package, it is now live on the server and can be found at the following URL.

Video Production

Video Production

The brief specifies that the website must incorporate an original video that we must produce for it. I have decided to do this in the form a video for the homepage, a sort of advert that could also be used for the TV.

Idea
My Idea is based around my slogan "Comedy 4 Everyone" and extending this to fantasy extremes of even pets watching the channel and being entertained. I am going to use gold fish in there bowl watching the TV as my initial idea, the fish will have a voice over and be talking to each other about the channel and its shows. I would also like to incorporate some sort of comedy into it and make it funny, in order to keep it linked to my channel and make it entertaining for the viewer. The way in which I intend to do this is by making a Cat interupt the fish and then speed up the footage with a comedy style music track overlayed.

Setting
This will be set in my home kitchen with the fish bowl set in front of the TV,with one of the channels comedy shows playing on it to give the idea of the fish watching it.

Storyboard
This is the storyboard I created in order to help with the shooting of this video.

Shooting Schedule
Here is the shooting schedule for the entire shoot.

The Shoot
The shoot took place on the 11th January, all went well, and I managed to get all the shots that I enquired. I used for this a Handycam, due to the fact that this will just be a low resolution video for the front of a website as well as the fact that it is the only resource I had access to at this time.

Behind the Scenes
Here is a video of the voice over recording.

Post Production
To create this I took the footage into "Pinnacle Studio 12" as this had to be completed in my own time and is the piece of software that I have on my Home PC. It is a very easy to use piece of software that still offers all the professional capabilities that I required to make this Video. I required to cut together the shots as well as change the speed of shots, add music an end title, as well as overlay the voice over which I recorded separately with the actors, and be able to overlay the soundtrack music. This piece of software enabled me to do all of this professionally and with a couple of nice transitions I could use and the ability to export it to a web and device friendly format it was exactly what i needed.

To Conclude
I feel that this is exactly what my site needed and has allowed me to complete the requirement in the specification. I have shown this to quite a few people and it has had good feedback. This can now been posted on my websites homepage.

The Final Cut
This is the final cut of the video that will be incorporated into the homepage of my comedy TV channels website.

Designing

Designs
Before starting production I had to make sure that I had some sort of design and idea for each piece and had a semi-clear idea about what I wanted at the end, as well as what I had to create.

Designing the Poster

The idea behind a poster in general is to advertise something, it must stand out, so that if someone walks past it it catches there eye and instantly grabs there attention, and makes them want to read on. The poster couldn't contain loads of information as no one wants to stop and read it for ages, so I decided on no small text just large, bold and colourful text that can be read with a glance at it.

I wanted to convey some information, though so I will do this using images, the main information I want conveyed is the programs that are on the channel, this will be done with a series of well recognisable images that can be instantly catch the eye of someone that likes that show.

Designing the Listings Spread

I started by thinking that a visual double page spread would be the way to carry this out and this is the design I created for it.

However then I realised that most people buy a listings guide to read so therefore I don't want to waste this opportunity to get information on my channel out there, and get the idea of my channel across. I therefore decided that a visual pece would be on one page with the other page being text about the channel with the listings for the opening weekend incorperated somehow.

Research- Double Page Spread (Listing Guide)

Research
Due to the changes I thought I had better carry out some research into double page spreads in listing magazines.

Here are a couple of pages from the "Radio Times"

A double page spread is a very versatile piece of marketing for something like a TV channel as practically any aspect works, it can be a simple advert majorly made up from pictures, interviews, specific to one TV show on the channel or as a place where detailed information on the channel itself can be shared.

Changes & Problems

Production and changes to my initial plan

Production has been going well however, due to the fact that it will be difficult to be able to learn and create an Ident sequence using flash in the time we have left I have decided that creating a double page spread for a listings magazine focusing on the launch of the channel would be the more appropriate piece to create. I will create this using the program In design, this will allow me to create a professional looking spread.

Other difficulties have been the fact that it has been unclear about whether we were allowed to use real life TV programs to show on our channel as well as images from the shows, or whether everything had to be original, with discussing this with all three of my tutors and with OCR being emailed this still has not become any clearer as we seem to always get a different response from each tutor and an email from OCR saying consult you tutor so therefore as this will change the complete concept for my channel and what I have been working on, of classic comedy from around the world I feel that it in order for me to being able to complete the work by the deadline creating all brand new shows and taking brand new images is going to be next to impossible, so therefore I shall stick with my current plan and hope that as I have stated the problem that it will not hinder my marks in anyway.

Identity

Identity of Channel

I have been working an Identity for the channel it has a name "World Of Comedy" and I have created this logo which will be the branding for the channel on adverts, listings, on screen and on the website.

This is simple yet effective it instantly sums up the channel and is something bold and iconic, that can be easily recognized and associated with the channel by the audience when they see it.

Research

Research into name of TV channel:

I used the list of names i had created earlier to create a questionnaire on them, they were asked which name they think would be the best for the type of channel i am aiming at and overall which on they preferred. This was a good test as this was aimed at the predicted main demographic of the channel and these were the results received from them:

(Based on class of 16 students aged 17-18)

- Laugh TV 12%
- Comedy World 45%
- World of Comedy 10%
- Com Net 8%
- Com Eddie TV 10%
- LaughOutLoud TV (LOL) 12%
- Funny 4 u 3%

To get a wider opinion on the name I also asked a further 30 members of the public with ages ranging from 17-65 and these were the results received

- Laugh TV 8%
- Comedy World 56%
- World of Comedy 20%
- Com Net 5%
- Com Eddie TV 5%
- LaughOutLoud TV (LOL) 4%
- Funny 4 U 2%

They were also asked whether they felt "Comedy '4' everyone " was a good tag line the results for this was:

(Based on 36 people aged 17-65)

Yes 84%
No 16%

From all these results it is clear to see my choice on TV channel name, "Comedy world" does seem to be the most popular and not just from a single age group, which means I will be reaching a broad demographic with this name which means that the channel I am creating will not be isolated to one set of viewers and can connect to many different age groups and types of people, just from the name which will be one of the main things that draws people in.

My choice in slogan also does seem to be popular among a vast selection of people which will mean that it is a good choice for the channel to also aid in drawing people in and getting across what the channel offers in a single line.

Idea Development

Idea Development

My general Idea is to create a new comedy channel for British TV, which would show a mixture of US and UK comedy shows. My aim is to make my channel the channel that everyone knows as the channel for comedy with large viewing figures and be a household name and become a success.

The first thing I am going to focus on is a name for my channel I have been trying to think of something thats bold, only one or two words and is something that will become a household name and that everyone knows what your talking about. After several ideas such as:
- Laugh TV
- Comedy World
- World of Comedy
- ComNet
- Com Eddie TV
- LaughOutLoud (LOL)
- Funny 4 u
I decided on the name Comedy World as it relates directly to my idea for the channel of it being a chnnel with comedy for all ages and from all corners of the globe. A tag line or slogan will also be required that is also what comes to mind when people hear the name this will be used and aid the advertising campaign. The recent success of the line "up your Viva" is an example of the kind of thing that is going to be needed. In looking for names i believe i have found a slogan that could be used for this channel and this is "Funny 4 u" or "Comedy '4' Everyone" as it uses the abbreviation technique and is quick and easy to use and is something that could also be Incorporated into my ident sequence for between shows, and is a good marketing tag line to use on adverts.

Specific example- Viva

There has very recently been a new TV channel released called "Viva" this is a new music channel that has been added to freeview. This is a very good real world example that i am looking at in order to aid me in my work.

It has marketed its channel with TV ads as well as newspaper adverts, I saw it in the free London paper the Metro which I have shown the advert for previously.

They have marketed there channels opening with the phrase "up your Viva" this has been on numerous TV adds leading up to its opening weekend to get this new channel known by as many people as possible and to get people talking about it.

This is the add they showed leading up to the channels launch:

Statement of intent

Statement of Intent

I have looked at the coursework brief and carried out some research into current channels and how their websites, adverts and idents look this has given me ideas and i feel that there is a gap in the market for a new TV channel specifically aimed at comedy shows for all ages and from all corners of the globe. This would be a channel that showed comedy programs for all ages and both from the UK and the US. It will be a channel were old sitcoms met new comedy dramas and were everyone will find something to enjoy from it.
I will create an exciting and young feeling website that will give information on the shows coming up as well as features, news and fun aspects that will keep the user coming back and feel that the website is useful for them.
.
I have also chosen to create an Ident for the channel, my plan is to do this using a mixture of moving image as well as flash sequences or graphics to make a simple yet effective Ident sequence that will look professional. Obviously i do not have the resources to compete with the BBC but many channels do have very simple Idents that i should be able to compare with mine. There is also a requirement that the website must contain moving image so this i shall post on the website to fulfill this need.
.
Along with both of these I shall create a newspaper advert promoting the channels opening night this will be quite simple with the logo and information on maybe a few of the hit shows that it will broadcast.
.
In order to create these i will use many software programmes to help me for example, I will be using "Dreamweaver" in order to create the website as well as "Photosop" to help create the photos and pictures that will be on the site. I will use "Photoshop" for all images that i need in my task to edit or create them. I will then use Flash in order to create an ident for my TV channel as well as "InDesign" for the newspaper advert. Moving image is required for the website as well as for my Ident so I will therefore have to use camera equipment and Final Cut in order to create this and then upload to my website.

Research- Newspaper Adverts

Newspaper advert examples

I must also create a newspaper advert for the TV channel to help promote its opening night. Many TV channels advertise there new much anticipate shows to help boost there viewing figures they do this on there own channel with regular adverts, this is free for the time to do and extremely successful, but occasionally they will advertise on other channels t help boost awareness even more. This is as well as adverts in magazines and newspapers especial if they can get on the front of the TV guide this will be very beneficial.

Research- TV Ident sequences

TV channel ident sequences

Ident sequences are made by channels for the break between programs. These can be very simple flash sequences or can be moving image with overlaid flash and graphics. The overall requirement is to just get across what channel the person is watching in an exciting way. Voice overs are usually on top of these to tell the viewer what is coming up next and later that evening.

The main channel Idents are general and mainly have mixture of Video and flash graphics, I feel this is the best path to go down due to resources and will be the easiest way to create a professional looking Idents .

ITV Ident sequence

Collection of channel 4 Ident sequences

Channel Five Idents

More specific Idents

The previous Idents have been fairly general channels this is a channel that is more specific to the idea that I am developing.

Research- TV channel websites

Research

TV channel website

Before i can start to design my website for my new TV channel I have decided to look at others to get some ideas and see what content should be present in them.

I started by looking at the home pages for several TV channels they included:

BBC website

This website is very general it is for the entire BBC not just the TV channel so this includes items such as: news, weather, sport, radio, TV ect. This is a very visual website with lots of pictures, videos and bright vibrant colours. This is an inviting and interactive website with simple sections so that you can easily find out what you want.

BBC Three website

This is another BBC channel and can be found through the BBC's website, this website is more specific and is the BBC channel that is aimed more at teenagers so is designed more for there target audience. This again is very visual and has many videos of there most popular shows for people to catch up on. Apart from this there isn't much else on this site as it is so specific to this particular channel. This has a more informal style to aim for the teenager age group.

ITV website

ITV again is a large company with many TV channels but this is the only real area they cover unlike the BBC so their website is focused on the TV area but they do have diffident sections for each of there channels. Therefore there website is quite general and then when going through to the individual channels the website becomes more specialised to its target audiences. this website has a main banner with recent shows and has other news and links to its hit shows underneath. This website again has very vibrant colours and is easy to use with it split into useful sections.

Channel 4 website

This website is quite dark and just uses the main space to advertise there new hit show, with links to listings and catch up. Underneath this it shows what is on tonight and has links to its other channels such as E4, More 4 and film 4, all of which have separate websites which keeps things more simple for the user.

Now I will look into a more specific site which is based round my current idea of a channel for comedy shows.

E4 website

This website is for one of channel 4's other channels which is E4 this again is a more specialized channel and aimed at the younger market with more teenage style programs shown. This website is again very vibrant in colour and very busy with a main banner advertising the latest shows and then links to other popular shows and a couple of relevant adverts at the bottom to generate revenue. As well as these like all the others listings for the channel are also included. this is also a more comedy related channel.

Comedy Central Website

This website seems to stick with the reoccurring theme of bright colours and it has large bold text throughout its website as well as competitions, quizzes, jokes, videos and much more this is a very busy website and has many items to keep the user entertained as soon as they get too it.

Coursework Brief

Coursework Brief (9)
The brief i have chosen to be my focus for my A2 coursework is:

To create a website for a new TV channel (to include a minimum of three hyperlinked pages with original images, audio and video extract), together with two of the following options:

- a newspaper advertisement for the channel

- a double page spread for a listings magazine, focused on the channel's launch

- an animated ident sequence for the channel.

A2 Media Coursework

This is a blog set up by me in order to document my coursework over the course of the year and show how i am progressing with the tasks.
